The Genie licence structure has changed for Version 3 Release 5.
This is the last paid major version upgrade of Genie. In the past, these upgrades were followed by minor free updates until the next major upgrade.
Updates are now available for 12 months from purchase of a new or upgraded licence. After 12 months, a small annual fee is charged to extend the upgrade validity period.
What are the benefits of the new structure ?
Major changes will be released when they are ready, instead of being held back for the next major release. This means that customers will have access to changes more quickly. Another benefit is that we can keep the price for new Genie licences to its current level.
Will Genie keep working when a licence has expired ?
Yes, as in the past, Genie will continue to function. The only difference is that attempts to install upgrades past the upgrade validity date will fail.
What happens if Genie needs to be installed onto a new computer after the update validity has expired ? Can the updates be re-installed ?
Yes. The validity of the update is calculated based on a date in the update, not the date when it is installed.
What happens if the update period has lapsed and we want to install an update ?
Customers can purchase ‘catch-up’ upgrade licences. For example, if Genie upgrade validity has been expired for 6 months, an upgrade licence can be purchased dated from the expiry date. This enables updates for the period for 12 months from the expiry date. If a site needs to catch up a number of years, the cost of the upgrades can be negotiated to ensure that the cost is not higher than a new licence.
